When Should You Remove a Tree? Signs It’s Time to Act

Most people don’t want to remove a healthy tree, and we don’t want to take down trees that don’t need to go. But some trees become a risk. Here are the signs to watch for.

Signs a tree may need to come down

  • Dead or dying branches. Bare limbs, brittle wood or no leaves in growing season.
  • A lean that’s getting worse. Especially if the soil is heaving at the base.
  • Cracks and splits. Deep cracks in the trunk or where branches join.
  • Fungus and rot. Mushrooms at the base or soft, hollow wood.
  • Root damage. Exposed, cut or lifting roots from building or digging.
  • Storm damage. Large broken limbs or a trunk that’s moved.

Other reasons to remove a tree

  • It’s damaging a house, pipes, driveway or fence
  • It’s too close to buildings or powerlines
  • It’s in the way of a build, pool or extension
