Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal: Which Is Right for You?

Published 6 June 2025 · By KTS Kempsey Tree Services

Once the tree is down, you’re left with a stump. You have two main options, and the best choice depends on what you plan to do with the space.

Stump grinding

A grinder chews the stump and main roots into mulch, below ground level. It’s fast, causes little mess and doesn’t require digging a big hole.

  • Best for: lawns, garden beds, paths and general tidy-ups.
  • Pros: quicker, usually cheaper, less disruption to the yard.
  • Cons: some root material stays in the ground, though it breaks down over time.

Full stump removal

Removal digs out the whole stump and root ball using machinery. It leaves a large hole to fill and more disturbance to the surrounding area.

  • Best for: sites that need a clean footing for a slab, pool, retaining wall or new building.
  • Pros: nothing left behind.
  • Cons: more digging, more disruption and usually a higher cost.

So which one?

For most homes, stump grinding is the right answer. If you’re building over the area, tell us, and we’ll advise on depth or removal. We can do either on the same visit as your tree removal.
