Avoid These Common Tree Pruning Mistakes

Pruning can help a tree thrive or slowly kill it. Here are the mistakes we see most often on Macleay Valley properties.
1. Topping the tree
Cutting the top off a tree produces weak, fast-growing shoots and leaves large wounds that rot. It’s one of the worst things you can do to a tree.
2. Cutting too much at once
Removing too much canopy stresses the tree and starves it of energy. As a rule of thumb, avoid taking more than a quarter of the canopy in one go.
3. Flush cuts and stubs
Cutting flush to the trunk removes the branch collar, which the tree uses to heal. Leaving a stub is just as bad because it rots back into the tree. The cut should be just outside the collar.
4. Pruning at the wrong time
Some trees bleed sap or lose their flowers if pruned at the wrong time. Dead and dangerous branches should go straight away, but other work should be timed for the species.
5. Using the wrong tools
Blunt or dirty tools tear bark and spread disease. Use sharp, clean tools and never prune near powerlines yourself.
6. DIY at height
Ladders and chainsaws are a bad mix. Falls and dropped limbs cause serious injuries every year. Leave high work to insured professionals.
